First Race Jitters

So I signed up for my first 5K and I'm getting really nervous! I thought it was important to do a small race before my big half marathon, so I found one online and registered. It's this Saturday and it's the Elvis Run 5K &10K in Oklahoma City. My training plan calls for 3 miles this weekend, so I chose the 5K. I'm nervous because I'm still very slow. I can maintain a 12-14 min mile no matter how far I'm going (at least so far), but I can't go faster in the shorter runs. This is the first year that the race is being held, so I have no idea if there will be other slow runners and walkers there. I'm ok with being slow, but I don't want to finish 10 minutes after everyone else does. Hopefully it works out that there are other slow runners there.

Anyways, the race also has a costume contest and I'm really excited about it. Mom is running with me, and were going as a pair of blue suede shoes! haha. I'm working on the costume now, so hopefully I will at least look cute finishing last! :P

Any tips for a first-timer?


  1. Don't start out too fast. Make sure you stick to your pace.
    If there are alot of people at the starting line I walk until there is plenty of room to move.

  2. Sounds like a blast! I agree with Amber - pace yourself. 5ks are all about having fun. Also, don't let the crowds frustrate you. Big, popular races aren't really the place for getting a PR - you might have to walk or slow down to get past so don't fixate on your time. Enjoy it, and good luck!
